Season 47 NL South Draft Review

Jackson

With the 28th pick, the Moonshiners selected RP Chad Miller.  This was a very good pick for so late in the first round.  Miller projects to be a guy who can easily top 100 innings and impressed with excellent velocity on his four seam fastball.  His slider is a good second pitch, and his changeup is best saved for special occasions.  Overall his pitches are just above average, as is his control.  The downside for him?  Signability.  He has yet to choose between a baseball career or a football career.

The Colt .45s picked community college1B Brian Ashburn with the 25th pick.  My scouts totally missed him, so all I know is that he is another player with leverage to demand an outrageous bonus and is also still unsigned.

Grade: Incomplete

San Juan

Daniel Blair was taken by the Padres 13th overall.  He was a High School shortstop who projects to be a 3rd baseman if his bat gets him to the Big Leagues, which it should.  He has very good power, especially against lefties.  His batting eye is average though and he will be a very free swinger.  He has above average speed, but his baserunning ability is pretty poor.

Grade:  C+

With the 11th pick, the Apocalypse Took college SS Arnold Hammel.  His defense looks to be just adequate at short due to range and arm accuracy issues.  His bat looks like it will play just fine at any infield position, though.  His contact skills will be about average, but he has plus power, batting average and splits. His speed and base running skills lead me to thin he has a shot at being a 30-30 guy.

Grade: B+
