Season 47 Draft Review - Projected ML Players from AL North and AL East

AL North

Kansas City
Nate Beirne. 30th pick. Has not signed and my scouts did not see him.

Philadelphia
Tim Nunnally, 27th pick. The main assets Nunnally, a 6’1” lefty from Trafalgar, Indiana, bring to the table are plus-plus velocity and a plus fastball/slider combo. Both pitches will be major-league caliber but the rest of his repertoire does not inspire confidence. While he will have success against lefties (81 projection), he’ll be below-average against ML righties (59). The biggest hurdle on his route to the show, however, is his lack of control, projected to top out at 47. Nevertheless, as a late-first pick, he has some shine. Grade: B.

Milwaukee Picking 10th, the Chedda selected Johermyn Madson, a junior college infielder out of Roane State Community College (Tennessee) and Eastern (yes, that's a town), KY. Madson starts his journey to the Majors with pretty good power - that will be his calling card and could get him to/keep him in the Bigs for awhile. He'll likely find a spot as a starting 2B, 3B or CF, although if he hits the Bigs with a good team he might be consigned to a utility role. Interesting comparison with Arnold Hammel, who went 1 pick later. Hammel is the better defender, Madson a better baserunner, but they're nearly identical hitters. Grade: A-

Montreal

The Mashers get Henderson Ramsey, a college RF out of the U of Arkansas, at #14.  Ramsey's an intriguing power/speed combo who has some flaws but will probably be able to work around them.  He's going to have some trouble with righties, but I think his other ratings will be good enough that he'll still have some good overall seasons.  His arm probably isn't going to be ideal for RF, but being a great-ranged LF or 1B isn't a terrible downside.  He's also likely to hit the DL pretty frequently.  I really overlooked this guy because of the vR, but I  like the pick at 14.  Grade: B

AL East

Buffalo
Brennan Farquhar, 5th pick. The Ruffalos got a good one at #5, though Farquhar is a bit of a tweener in a traditional ML staff. He will dominate righties, has excellent control, and will keep the ball in the park. He’ll have a plus 4-seamer and an average curve, but lacks a solid third offering. This won’t matter much if he ends up in the bullpen, as his projected 31 durability and 58 stamina suggest. Regardless, he’s a very solid ML pitcher who will end up as a nice swing starter or shut-down reliever. If the 18 year-old makes it to the show, he’ll be the first-ever major-leaguer born in beautiful Shasta Lake, California to do so. Grade: B-.

Toledo
Ben Buchanan, 22nd pick. Buchanan is a short (5’9”), wiry RH hitter out of Springville, NY. While he has the glove to play a passable 2B, his range is far below average which makes me think he’ll end up as an above-average defensive LF. While he hits lefties with some pop, he is not likely to make enough solid contact to stick in a ML lineup. Grade: C.

Boston
At 24, the Bellies get Robert Wilson, RF. Similar to the #14 pick Ramsey, but he doesn't rip lefties the way Ramsey does, and has the same trouble with righties (not quite as severe). He just doesn't have that one ability that jumps out and yells "Major League," although he's good enough to see the Majors if he gets lucky. Likely to be a fringe ML or 4A player. Grade: C

Trenton
At #9, Trenton goes with Henderson Pellow, a SS out of California. My scouts missed Pellow, but he's starting with very good defensive ratings - he looks every bit a future ML shortstop with great range and a bazooka arm. His splits start at 37...maybe they can reach the 50's. If so he'd be a better-than-average hitting SS, especially since the batting eye promises to supplement his OBP well. As always, we have to temper our updie expectations somewhat with 21-yo prospects - some of them just stop developing in a year or 2 (but seemingly not all). That concern aside, Pellow looks like the real deal. Grade: A
