Trade Digest Volume 6

There will be a volume #7 tomorrow, but I might as well release what I have now since there were a bunch of trades since the last digest.

The Jacksonville Fake ID’s trade Greg Ward and cash to the Colorado House of Horrors for Dennys Clark and Alcides Zurbaran

This trade is a complete win for Colorado in the short term.  Ward isn’t what he once was, but he is still good for a .375 OBP and 20 steals.  Defensively he is still a plus LF or 1B and to get him at 0 cost for this season probably worth 2 wins for his new team.  For Jacksonville the acquisition of Vic Campos meant that Ward was really no longer needed since despite his wonderful bat he was not going to push either Campos, Carlos Vladivia, or Tanner Mlicki for at bats.  He would have been a useful backup, but getting Clayton Brooks filled that role as well.  It was not going to make sense to pay him 16.4 mil over the next 2 years.  However, Colorado does not have the same depth of stars that Jacksonville has so Ward will probably be useful and worth the money for the life of his contract.

Zurbaran is trash, ignore him.  The small value Jacksonville got back is Clark.  On a normal team he is a pretty useful Long B/Mopup guy.  Jacksonville has too much pitching depth to find a spot for him on their 25 for now, but he will be the first callup if there is an injury and will be the first guy brought up in September.

The Honolulu Luau Dawgs trade Giomar Almadova to the Helena Hot Heads for

Stolmy Rios and Eduardo Albaladejo

I don’t understand this trade for Honolulu.  Almadova is a terrific hitting catcher with passable defensive ability  He’ll neve be a top 20 player, but he’s above average for a ML catcher on an acceptable deal.  The Dawgs save a little money but not enough.  Rios will be a decent back-of-the-bullpen guy.  Albalaejo looks sub ML to me so far.  Rios is a decent player, but not nearly enough for Almadova in my opinion.

The Honolulu Luau Dawgs trade Yimi Costilla and 2 million to the Helena Hot Heads for John Holmes

I don’t get this one either.  Costilla is a much better prospect and somehow the Hot Heads got 2 million cash too.  He’s not a top prospect, but he’s the only sure-fire ML’er in the deal.  The oddest thing is that this deal went down 8 days ago and Costilla hasn’t been assigned yet.  If he isn’t in the next 2 days he’ll be released.
